Tracking Links

Tracking Links builds a link to any page with your UTM tags, saves it, and shows how many visits it brings. Use it for emails, social posts, bios, partner links and print: anywhere you want to know which link sends traffic.

Before You Start

Visits are counted by the RapidMetrics tracking script on the page the link opens, so make sure that page has the tracking code from this workspace. See Installing the Tracking Code. A link to a page without the script records nothing.

Create a Link

  1. Click Tracking Links in the left sidebar, then New Link.
  2. Optionally give it a Link name, like "October newsletter". Without one, the link is named after the website's domain.
  3. Paste the full page address into Destination URL, starting with https:// or http://.
  4. Optionally fill the UTM fields: Source, Medium, Campaign, Term and Content. A filled field replaces the same parameter in your URL, and an empty one leaves it as it is. Other parameters and page anchors are kept.
  5. Click Save & copy short link (or Save & copy link when the short link is switched off). The link is saved and copied, ready to paste.

Saving adds a tracking ID to the link. That ID is how RapidMetrics tells this link's visits apart, so always share the copied link, not the preview.

Short Links

Also create a short link is on by default. It gives you a short address like https://www.rapidmetrics.ai/go/k3x9qa that opens the same page and counts in the same report. Handy for bios, texts and print. Switch it off if you only want the full link.

A short link isn't made when:

  • Your URL contains Facebook placeholders such as {{ad.id}}. Facebook fills them in only in the ad's own URL, so put the full link in your ad. The switch turns off by itself for these links.
  • The address isn't a public website, for example an IP address or a local network name.

Your full link is still saved and copied, and a message tells you why there is no short link.

Click IDs that Facebook, Instagram and Google add to a link, such as fbclid, are passed on to your page. If your subscription ends, short links open the RapidMetrics website instead of your page, and new visits stop being recorded for all your links.

See How a Link Performs

The table on the Tracking Links page lists every link with its Created At date and its all-time Visits. Search by name, copy a link with the copy icon next to it, or click a row to open the link's own page:

  • Total Visits, Last 30 Days, Top Country and Top Device
  • A chart of visits for each of the last 30 days, in your workspace's time zone
  • Visits by Devices (mobile, desktop, tablet and bots) and by Countries (the top five)

What Counts as a Visit

A visit is a page view of the link's page, recorded by your tracking script. If someone opens the link twice, that's two visits, so the number counts visits, not people. Someone who saves or previews the link without opening the page isn't counted. Links you shared before saving them here can't be added to a saved link's history.

A country or device shows as Not recorded when none was saved for that visit, and a country shows as Unknown country when its location couldn't be worked out.

Rename or Delete a Link

Use Edit on a link's page, or in the Actions column, to rename it. The address itself can't be changed, because your ads and posts already use it. For a different page, create a new link.

Delete removes the link and its report. The full link keeps opening your page and its visits are still recorded, but you won't see a report for it anymore. The link's short link stops working and opens the RapidMetrics website.

Everyone in your workspace can create, rename and delete links.

Visits Show 0?

  • Check that the page the link opens has the tracking code from this workspace.
  • Make sure you shared the copied link, not the preview or the original address. Only the saved link carries its tracking ID.
  • Open the link yourself: your own visit shows up right away, so it's a quick test.
💡 Using a tracking link in a Facebook ad? Paste your ad URL with its ad parameters already in it, and put the full link in your ad. See Ad Attribution Setup.
